The train station is like a threshold for travelers, a shelter, and a temporary stop before embarking on their journey or returning home. Walking is our bodies’ most basic activity, and it has its own tempo and rhythm that fluctuates with the circumstances, routines, and so on. Just as our limbs rotate from our joints when we move, movement can only occur in relation to a fixed point of reference. The original structure hence, becomes consistent, while the other programs sometimes contain and protrude allow one to perceive and ‘experience’ movement.

Shanghai to PingYao, China

Travellers tend to feel indifferent about travelling, treating it as an extended threshold to get to their destination. But it allows one to be more aware of the world around them. Strangers cross paths, get briefly entangled in one other’s lives, and overhear bits of stories in this enclosed and intimate setting.

The notion of the artist, the viewer, and the art are all intertwined. The artist lets the art and the viewer take control of how they are perceived, in this case are the travellers and the locals. The subjects are unpredictable, the artist sets up a framework, the apparatus of viewing the subject, the architecture. Just as the travellers are watching a live documentary from above, while the residents observe the tourists from below.
